Show Concept:

In scholarly research, what is accepted as “known” must be validated by other professionals in that field. This system is formalized in the peer-review process common in academic journals, where articles submitted are recommended for inclusion or rejection by a panel of reviewers. Outside the academic environment, knowledge is often generated and validated by a much broader and less formal notion of common consensus, and sites like Wikipedia make this process concrete.

The jury process for this exhibition mimics these collective validations of knowledge by creating a pool of “experts” that will recommend work for inclusion in the show. By submitting work, you are automatically included as a specialist in this field. Applying to the show requires that you participate in the peer-review of other applicant’s work, ultimately deciding collectively whose work will be included.

This exhibition seeks works that concentrate on the nature of knowledge. What do we know, how do we come to know it, and what are the limits of knowing? Possible relevant works include those that address credibility, skepticism, conspiracy, infallibility, trust, belief/disbelief, certainty/uncertainty, reliability, the veracity of information, the validity of objectivity, forms of knowledge transmission, and structures of information.

All types of media are encouraged, including zines, installations, videos, performance, paintings, sculptures, drawings, essays, readings, online work, sound pieces, or proposals for new work, etc. Written submissions can be academic papers, excerpts, poetry, fiction, essay, or something that defies categorization.

Peer-review process

All of the work that is submitted will be hosted on the show website (http://acceptedknowing.wordpress.com). Once the period for accepting submissions closes, instructions will be given for how to review the work. Based on the peer reviews of the work, pieces will be selected for inclusion by the curatorial advisors and those pieces that are juried in through the peer-review process will then be exhibited at Figure One Exhibition Space in downtown Champaign, Illinois (see timeline below for more details).
